So you want to get into the modelling and become a model? Our advice will help set you on the path to achieving this and help you avoid any pitfalls on the way.
One of the most common questions asked by those who want to become a model is ‘how do I get into modelling?’.
Well, the simplest way is to start marketing yourself to modelling agencies.
And to do that, you need to build up a portfolio. It is worth getting some shots done by a reputable and professional photographer as they can present you in the best possible light.
Remember that you want some good quality pictures but some also that really stand out and lift you above the crowd.
You then need to find a list of reputable modelling agents and then start your marketing campaign, asking for a meeting, sending an element of your portfolio and so on.
Modelling success involves concentrating on the mainstream market of commercial and glamour modelling; then models in this area tend to share a few characteristics.
As well as knowing what to do when it comes to modelling, there are some other things that you should ensure that you do not do.
One important thing not to do is to ever part with cash with an agency up front. That’s because they may make a large percentage of their money from the models themselves (their clients) rather than through getting you work.
The best modelling agencies won’t charge you to be on their books because they are going to ’sell’ you to their clients in order to get both them and you money.
You should also check out any agency before you go to visit. Never go to a private address for instance and certainly don’t go unaccompanied.
If you need to build a portfolio before you start approaching agencies, then I suggest working with photographers who are willing to work for TFP (Time for print). This is an agreement between model and photographer where no money is exchanged.
Instead you’re both developing your portfolios, the photographer gets to shoot a model, and the model gets a copy of these photos to add to their portfolio. I would advise looking at a photographers existing work where possible before working with them as to ensure it is of the quality you would like.
More importantly you should never go to a job alone take a friend with you, if you can’t do this, let someone know the exact address where you will be going, stay safe and if you’re at all uncomfortable with what a photographer asks firmly decline.
