Those of you who watched The Mentalist last week were introduced to the newest member of the California Bureau of Investigations, Madeline Hightower (Aunjanue Ellis). Hightower is the new Special Agent in charge of the CBI team and has replace Virgil Minelli (Gregory Itzin) who recently retired from the CBI after some of his agents were killed during a recent episode involving Red John. Hightower came on the scene this week and let the entire team know that her ultimate intention is to improve the reputation of the CBI due to the recent issues they have encountered.
The first interaction between Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney), we see a look of concern on Lisbon’s face as Jane tries to assure her that the new boss will be fine. During Jane’s time with the CBI he has convinced the team to use some unorthodox methodes to capture their criminals. They always work but are often met with opposition from local law enforcement.
The Red Box storyline was not one of the more interesting storylines from this year but the writers of this show are really good at setting the viewers up for what potentially lies ahead. As each of the team members meet with Special Agent Hightower throughout the involvement with the investigation of the murder of James Smithson, we begin to uncover more about Hightower and her intentions. When she meets with Lisbon she informs Lisbon that her job to keep Patrick Jane in line. If she can’t do it, Hightower will find another agent who can.
We then fast forward to the latter part of the episode where Hightower and Jane have their first official meeting. Here we learn that Hightower is awed with Jane and his ability to close cases. Jane is untouchable in the eyes of Special Agent Hightower. Jane does a fantastic job in this scene of not showing any of his cards to Hightower or the audience leaving us unsure of where he will go from here with his behavior.
The avid fans of The Mentalist who are active in the online community know that Teresa Lisbon is not the most loved actress or character on the incredibly successful hit show. Having watched The Mentalist from the beginning, Bruno Heller and John Mankiewicz do a great job dropping subtle hints on the direction they are going to take the show. Are Hightower’s comments throughout this episode just another hint that we might be seeing the end of Teresa Lisbon? The remainder of the season will tell but I have a feeling The Mentalist and the incredible cast and writers will be around for some time to come.

Unless you have had your head in the sand for the past couple of years, you will undoubtedly have heard about the tv show called How I Met Your Mother. Time and time again, How I Met Your Mother has been compared to Friends. So, what is the final word? Where do people really stand on the controversy of How I Met Your Mother Vs. Friends?
When looking at what people have to say about the two shows, it doesn’t take very long to come to the conclusion that How I Met Your Mother is a worthy contender to the comedy powerhouse that was Friends. That is an amazing idea considering each member of the cast on Friends made more than $1 million per episode. Here are a few of the things people are saying…
- The general opinion is hands down that How I Met Your Mother cast member Niel Patrick Harris out performs any cast member from Friends.
- Although it was huge in it’s day, many people, looking back at Friends, aren’t very impressed. Granted, our society has come along way, however, this cultural shift has been met head on by How I Met Your Mother.
- How I Met Your Mother relates closely to the world as it is today. Friends, though very funny, never connected on a deeper level with it’s audience as How I Met Your Mother does.
- Many people who were extremely loyal to Friends now say that they prefer How I Met Your Mother.
- How I Met Your Mother has likely gathered the following it has due to the opinion that the writing is wittier than in Friends.
- Both shows are based in New York and are centered around 20-something friends just out of college. This underlying connection is why so many people have made a quick connection with How I Met Your Mother.
- The typical viewing age for both shows is the same while the underlying concept for both shows is also the same. How I Met Your Mother may very well be lucky enough to ride on the success of Friends which is why it has become so popular.
To summarize, the general opinion is that How I Met Your Mother wins without a doubt. The improved writing, better story line, Niel Patrick Harris, and it’s ability to connect even more with the 20 something crowd being the reasons for its success. Still, as Friends was one of the most successful television sitcoms in history, it should remain respected.
